WASHBURN RURAL TOPS FREE STATE, 16-2, BEHIND CARNEY'S FOUR HITS TO WIN THE REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME AND GAIN A BID TO 6A STATE.

Alyssa Carney hit for the cycle to carry Washburn Rural to a 16-2 win over Free State at WRHS in five innings.  Carney was unstoppable at the plate and did what few players have done when she hit for the cycle. Carney went 4-4 in the game. She doubled in the first inning, homered in the first inning, tripled in the third inning, and singled in the fourth inning.  The biggest inning for Washburn Rural was the first. Washburn Rural's bats caught fire leading to nine runs.  Kelsee Henry got the win for Washburn Rural. She allowed two runs over five innings. Henry struck out three, walked two and gave up eight hits. Washburn Rural hammered Free State pitching as six hitters had a field day, combining for 14 hits, 10 RBIs and 14 runs scored. Free State jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Free State's threat began with a single by Rogers. A groundout by Samuels then moved Rogers from first to second. Parker doubled, bringing home Rogers and Hill.  Washburn Rural brought home two runs in the second inning, and matched that run total in the fourth. In the second, Washburn Rural scored on a sacrifice fly by Jenny Metzger, bringing home Hannah Weingartner.  Washburn Rural tacked on another three runs in the third. The inning looked promising, as Abbey Breeding singled, scoring Carney to kick things off. That was followed up by Weingartner's double, scoring Breeding and Samantha Carson.

WASHBURN RURAL SCORE BIG AGAINST LEAVENWORTH, 15-0.

Washburn Rural bats came out strong in the semi-final game of the Softball regionals and defeated Leavenworth 15-0 in three innings.  Samantha Carson got the win for Washburn Rural as she pitched the complete game and also a shutout.  Rural was slow to get the game started by only scoring 2 runs in the first but after holding Leavenworth in the first two innings, Rural started a hitting fest and scored the next 8 runs in the bottom of the second. Rural finished off the game in the bottom of the third, scoring 5 additional runs to complete the game with 15 runs scored. Hannah Weingartner had 3 hits for the game with Rural getting 13 hits during the game.

EARLY LEAD GIVES WASHBURN RURAL EASY VICTORY OVER HAYDEN, 11-1

Washburn Rural jumped out to an early lead on Hayden and captured an 11-1 victory on Thursday at WRHS.  The game was decided quickly as Washburn Rural exerted its will early with nine runs in the first three innings.  A sacrifice fly by Abbey Breeding in the first inning and an RBI single by Alyssa Carney, a hit by pitch, a groundout by Breeding, and an RBI single by Samantha Carson during the second inning helped Washburn Rural put some runs on the board early.  Breeding racked up five RBIs on one hit for Washburn Rural.  Kelsee Henry brought the heat against Hayden during her outing. Hayden managed just two hits off of the Washburn Rural's pitcher, who allowed no earned runs, walked none and struck out one during her four innings of work. Washburn Rural tacked on another four runs in the third. The inning looked promising, as Abby Warkentine singled, bringing home Hannah Weingartner to kick things off. That was followed up by Breeding's double, plating Warkentine, Sophia Holman and Savannah Moore. It didn't take long for Washburn Rural to answer as it scored two runs of its own in the fifth. Washburn Rural scored on a bases loaded walk by Schmidt and an RBI single by Weingartner.

THIRD-INNING RALLY SPARKS BLOWOUT WIN FOR WASHBURN RURAL, 11-3

A 10-run explosion in the third inning led Washburn Rural to an 11-3 win in seven innings over Hayden on Thursday. Savannah Moore racked up three RBIs on three hits for Washburn Rural. She doubled in the third inning and singled in the first and third innings. Kelsee Henry recorded the win for Washburn Rural. She allowed three runs over six innings. Henry struck out five, walked three and gave up seven hits.  The bottom of the first saw Washburn Rural tie the game at 1-1 after initially going behind when Hayden's Mendoza hit a solo homerun to begin the game. The Washburn Rural attack began with a single from Alyssa Carney. A stolen base then moved Carney from first to second. Moore singled, scoring Carney.

JUNIOR VARSITY WIN BOTH AGAINST HAYDEN

The Junior Varsity won both their games against Hayden with the scores of 8-0 in the first game and 12-0 in the second game.

SIXTH-INNING RALLY SPARKS BLOWOUT WIN FOR WASHBURN RURAL, 13-3

Washburn Rural took down Manhattan 13-3 on Friday at WRHS after slamming Manhattan with eight runs in the sixth inning.  The teams traded runs for most of the contest, leading to five lead changes in the game.  Washburn Rural took the lead in the fourth inning and held on for the victory. Washburn Rural scored on an RBI single by Abbey Breeding off Devlin, plating Alyssa Carney.  Breeding racked up three RBIs on four hits for Washburn Rural.  Kelsee Henry got the win for Washburn Rural. She allowed three runs over four innings. She struck out one, walked one and surrendered five hits.  Washburn Rural closer Samantha Carson put away the final six outs to record the save.  The bottom of the first saw Washburn Rural take an early lead, 2-0. Carney started the rally for Washburn Rural with a single. A stolen base then moved Carney from first to second. Breeding doubled, scoring Carney. More runs came home for Washburn Rural when Breeding scored on a sacrifice fly by Hannah Weingartner.  Washburn Rural pushed one run across in each of the second, fourth and fifth. In the second, Washburn Rural scored on an RBI double by Carney, plating Emma Eickhoff.

SECOND-INNING RALLY SPARKS BLOWOUT WIN FOR WASHBURN RURAL, 8-0

Washburn Rural blew out Manhattan 8-0 on Friday at WRHS after pouring on six runs in the second inning.  Abby Warkentine racked up four RBIs on three hits for Washburn Rural. She homered in the second inning and singled in the third and fifth innings.  Washburn Rural's Kelsee Henry kept Manhattan off the scoreboard for all seven innings she was on the mound. She pitched a shutout, allowing no runs on three hits while striking out three.

JUNIOR VARSITY WIN BOTH AGAINST MANHATTAN

The Junior Varsity won both their games against Manhattan with the score of 6-1 in each contest.

WASHBURN RURAL SCORES BIG IN BOTH GAMES OF THE DOUBLEHEADER AGAINST HIGHLAND PARK.
Washburn Rural won the first game of a double header against Highland Park 15-0 capping it off with 4 homeruns in the game by Hannah Weingartner, Savannah Moore, Abbey Breeding, and Taylor Albright and Kelsey Henry picking up the win. In the second game, Rural defeated Highland Park, 20-1, wtih a homerun by Abby Warkentine and Sophia Holman with 5 RBIs and Abbey Breeding with 4 RBIs. Samantha Carson picked up the win.

WASHBURN RURAL OUTLASTS SHAWNEE HEIGHTS IN HIGH-SCORING AFFAIR, 15-10.
Pitchers had a tough day during the game between Washburn Rural and Shawnee Heights, as the two teams put up 25 runs combined in a 15-10 Washburn Rural win.  The teams combined for 27 hits, including 10 extra base hits.  Abbey Breeding had a hot bat for Washburn Rural. Breeding went 3-5, drove in one and scored four runs. She homered in the fifth inning and singled in the first and seventh innings.  Samantha Carson got the win in relief for Washburn Rural. Carson pitched 4 1/3 innings and allowed four runs.

HENRY HURLS GEM, BUT WASHBURN RURAL'S BATS GO QUIET IN 2-1 LOSS TO SHAWNEE HEIGHTS .
Kelsee Henry allowed just two runs on Thursday at Lake Shawnee, but Washburn Rural couldn't get the offense going in a 2-1 defeat to Shawnee Heights. Morgan recorded the win for Shawnee Heights. She allowed one run over seven innings. The Shawnee Heights pitcher struck out five, walked one and surrendered six hits.  Shawnee Heights stayed on top until the final out after taking the lead in the third, scoring two runs on two singles.  The sixth inning saw Washburn Rural score its only run on the day on an RBI single by Hannah Weingartner.

JUNIOR VARSITY SPLITS WITH SHAWNEE HEIGHTS

The Junior Varsity lost their first game against Shawnee Heights with a score of 2-0 but bounced back in the second game and won 9-3.

WASHBURN RURAL SEIZE VICTORY THANKS TO LATE TWO-RUN BLAST, DROP SEAMAN 8-6
Washburn Rural and Seaman exchanged the lead six times on Tuesday, but Washburn Rural ended up on top with a 8-6 win in eight innings over Seaman.  Washburn Rural took the lead in the eighth inning and held on for the victory. Washburn Rural went up for good on a two-run home run by Savannah Moore off Mikala Smith, plating Alyssa Carney.  Moore racked up three RBIs on three hits for Washburn Rural.  Samantha Carson got the win in relief for Washburn Rural. Carson pitched three innings and allowed one run.  The top of the first saw Seaman take an early lead, 1-0. Jenna Hosey singled to ignite Seaman's offense. A single by Makayla Greeve then moved Hosey from first to second. Mikala Smith singled, scoring Hosey. Seaman posted one run in each of the third, fourth and seventh. In the third, Seaman scored on an RBI single by Dani Spence, plating Hosey.  Washburn Rural answered Seaman's top inning with two runs of its own in the third. Washburn Rural scored on a bases loaded walk by Hannah Weingartner and a bases loaded walk.  Washburn Rural tied the game in the sixth on an RBI single by Carson that scored Abbey Breeding.

DESPITE HIT ADVANTAGE, WASHBURN RURAL DROPS 8-7 GAME TO SEAMAN
Washburn Rural lost 8-7 in seven innings on Tuesday, despite outhitting Seaman 15 to 10. Alyssa Carney racked up two RBIs on three hits for Washburn Rural. She singled in the first and second innings and homered in the sixth inning. Even though Mikala Smith allowed seven runs over seven innings she still recorded the victory. The Seaman pitcher struck out four, walked none and surrendered 15 hits. Seaman was sparked by Carly Smercheck and Dani Spence, who teamed up for three hits and four RBIs.  The bottom of the first saw Washburn Rural take an early lead, 1-0. Washburn Rural's threat began with a single by Carney. A stolen base then moved Carney from first to second. Savannah Moore doubled, bringing home Carney.  The game was never in doubt after the fifth, as Seaman scored six runs on a two-run home run by Spence and three singles. A three-run sixth inning helped bring Washburn Rural within three. An RBI single by Erin Peel and a two-run home run by Carney triggered Washburn Rural's comeback. But, Smith got Moore to ground out to end the inning.  Two runs in the bottom of the seventh helped Washburn Rural close its deficit to 8-7. An RBI double by Hannah Weingartner and an RBI double by Jenny Metzger fueled Washburn Rural's comeback. Washburn Rural's Peel grounded out to end the ballgame.

Washburn Rural lost a hotly contested 3-2 game in seven innings on Thursday after surrendering the lead in the sixth inning. Luna got it done on the rubber on the way to a win. She allowed two runs over seven innings. The Topeka High pitcher struck out four, walked two and surrendered six hits. Washburn Rural jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Savannah Moore started the rally for Washburn Rural with a single. A single by Kelsee Henry then moved Moore from first to second. Jenny Metzger singled, plating Moore. Topeka High didn't relinquish the lead after scoring two runs in the sixth inning when it scored on a sacrifice fly by Luna and an RBI triple by Acosto-Guerrero.

WASHBURN RURAL HANGS ON AGAINST TOPEKA HIGH, 5-4

Topeka High was never able to get over the hump and overcome its troubles against Washburn Rural on Thursday, as Topeka fell 5-4 at Hummer Park after falling behind by five runs in the third inning. Topeka High scored on a two-run double by Luna and a groundout by Hutton in the fourth inning and a fielder's choice in the sixth inning. Still, Topeka High couldn't draw even. Abbey Breeding got on base three times in the game for Washburn Rural. She singled in the first inning and doubled in the third inning. Samantha Carson got it done on the rubber on the way to a win. She allowed four runs over six innings. The Washburn Rural pitcher struck out seven, walked none and surrendered seven hits. The lead stayed with Washburn Rural after the first, when it scored one run on a passed ball.

JUNIOR VARSITY WINS TWO AGAINST TOPEKA HIGH

The Junior Varsity continued their winning against Topeka High, winning both with scores of 17-5 and 15-2.

WASHBURN RURAL BATS PRODUCE, WIN 16-0 OVER JUNCTION CITY

Washburn Rural had 14 hits on 16 runs to manage winning in three innings against Junction City.  Washburn Rural scored 5 runs in the 1st inning but exploded in the 2nd inning with 11 runs on 8 hits.  Kelsee Henry got the win with Samantha Carson relieving her in the top of the 3rd.  Junction City only managed one hit in the game. Abbey Breeding, Hannah Weingartner and Samantha Carson were 2-3 for the game with Carson recording 4 RBIs.

WASHBURN RURAL GETS SEVEN STRIKEOUTS FROM HENRY, WIN 8-0 OVER JUNCTION CITY

Kelsee Henry struck out seven batters to lift Washburn Rural to a 8-0 win over Junction City in seven innings on April 11th.  Washburn Rural blew out Junction City thanks to 12 hits, including six extra base hits.  Washburn Rural hit three home runs in the win. Home runs for Washburn Rural came when Jenny Metzger homered in the second inning, Savannah Moore homered in the third inning, and Hannah Weingartner homered in the fifth inning.

JUNIOR VARSITY WINS TWO AGAINST JUNCTION CITY

The Junior Varsity continued their winning against Junction City, winning both with scores of 15-0 and 15-0.

The Washburn Rural vs. Junction City softball game that was to be played on Thursday, April 12, 2012 has been moved to Wednesday, April 11th. The game will start at 3:30 p.m..

WASHBURN RURAL DRUBS WEST, 10-3

West had a tough outing on Monday, as Washburn Rural dominated in a 10-3 win in seven innings at WRHS.  The teams traded runs for most of the contest, leading to five lead changes in the game.  Washburn Rural pulled out the win thanks to a strong fourth inning. Washburn Rural scored on a two-run double by Savannah Moore off Officer, scoring Abby Warkentine and Alyssa Carney.  Kelsee Henry put herself in scoring position with two extra-base hits for Washburn Rural. She doubled in the first inning and homered in the third inning.  Henry recorded the win for Washburn Rural. She allowed three runs over four innings. The Washburn Rural pitcher struck out one, walked two and surrendered eight hits.  Washburn Rural's Carney, Moore, Henry and Samantha Carson combined for eight hits and seven RBIs.  Carson was superb in relief, pitching three scoreless innings while collecting six strikeouts and allowing one walk and two hits. Washburn Rural jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Carney singled to ignite Washburn Rural's offense. A stolen base then moved Carney from first to second. Henry doubled, plating Carney. Washburn Rural brought home one run in the second inning, and matched that run total in the third. Washburn Rural refused to relinquish the lead after grabbing it early against West, recording a 15-0 victory on Monday at WRHS.  The game was decided quickly as Washburn Rural exerted its will early with 11 runs in the first three innings.  A two-run single by Jenny Metzger and a two-run single by Hannah Weingartner during the first inning and an RBI single by Abbey Breeding, a two-run single by Metzger, an RBI single by Abby Warkentine, and a two-run double by Alyssa Carney in the second inning helped Washburn Rural put some runs on the board early. West's pitchers couldn't stop Savannah Moore at the plate. Moore went 2-4, drove in one and scored three runs. She singled in the second inning and doubled in the fourth inning. Kelsee Henry got the win for Washburn Rural. She pitched four shutout innings. The Washburn Rural pitcher struck out none, walked none and surrendered five hits. Washburn Rural pounded West’s pitching, as six hitters combined for 10 hits, 12 RBIs and eight runs scored. Talvert had a short outing, lasting only two innings in the circle for West before being pulled. Talvert allowed eight hits and 10 runs.

The Junior Varsity continued play on Monday, April 9th won 8-2.

WASHBURN RURAL VS. SHAWNEE HEIGHTS SOFTBALL GAME CANCELLED

The Washburn Rural vs. Shawnee Heights softball game that was to be played on Thursday, April 5, 2012 has been cancelled. This game has been rescheduled for Thursday, April 26, 2012.

WASHBURN RURAL OFFENSE TOO MUCH FOR BLUE VALLEY IN 12-5 ROUT

Washburn Rural jumped out to an early lead on Blue Valley and captured a 12-5 victory on Wednesday at Blue valley.  The game was decided quickly as Washburn Rural exerted its will early with seven runs in the first three innings.  A passed ball in the first inning and a walk by Abbey Breeding, a walk by Kelsee Henry, a passed ball, an RBI single by Jenny Metzger, and in the second inning supplied the early offense for Washburn Rural.  Metzger racked up three RBIs on three hits for Washburn Rural.  Zoe Krump put herself in scoring position with two extra-base hits for Blue Valley. Krump singled in the fourth inning and doubled in the fifth and seventh innings.   Samantha Carson was superb in relief, pitching two scoreless innings while collecting one strikeout and allowing no walks and three hits.  Henry showed good command, throwing strikes on 55 of her 93 pitches. Henry struck out five and walked four for Washburn Rural.  After pushing across three runs in the bottom of the fourth, Blue Valley faced just a 7-3 deficit. An RBI single by Becca McDonald, a walk by Kylie Tanner, and an error fueled Blue Valley's comeback. But, Henry got Meg Garton to strike out to end the inning.

WASHBURN RURAL OUTLAST BLUE VALLEY IN HIGH-SCORING AFFAIR, 13-9

Washburn Rural and Blue Valley lit up the scoreboard on Monday as they combined for 22 runs. In the end, Washburn Rural won the offensive battle 13-9 in seven innings.  The teams combined for 31 hits, including five extra base hits.  Abbey Breeding racked up four RBIs on five hits for Washburn Rural. Breeding doubled in the third, fourth, and fifth innings and singled in the first and seventh innings.  Blue Valley was led by a flawless day at the dish by Anna Varriano, who went 2-2 against Washburn Rural's pitching. Varriano singled in the second and fifth innings.  Kelsee Henry had great control, throwing strikes on 69 of her 115 pitches. Henry collected seven strike outs and walked three for Washburn Rural.

JUNIOR VARSITY WINS TWO

The Junior Varsity started their season against Blue Valley and won both games with the scores of 16-1 and 14-4.

 

Coach Holaday Named KCA Softball Coach of the Year

Coach Brenda Holaday was recently selected as the Kansas Coaching Association's Softball Coach of the Year. She was also selected as the 6A Coach of the Year. This award is voted on by all the softball coaches throughout the state of Kansas. She will be honored at the KCA Coaching School next August, where she will also be a presenter at the clinic.

BREEDING SIGNS WITH WASHBURN UNIVERSITY

Abbey Breeding has signed a national letter of intent to play softball for Washburn Univesity next fall. Breeding earned All league, All City, All State and South Central Region honors a year ago, playing first base for the Lady Blues.

 

WASHBURN RURAL PLAYS AT 6A STATE TOURNAMENT

Rural Softball will play Olathe Northwest in the first round of the 6A state softball tournament that is being held at Blue Valley West in Overland Park. They will play on Friday, May 25 at 1:00 p.m. Here is a link to the 6A state tournament bracket: 6A State Tournament Bracket

Jr. VARSITY ScheduleS ADDITIONAL GAME

During the home games on Tuesday, May 1st, he Jr. Varsity will play Seaman while the Varsity will be playing Highland Park.

SEAMAN GAME TIMES FOR TUESDAY, APRIL 24, 2012

A reminder that the games on Tuesday, April 24, 2012 will start at 3:00 p.m. not 4:00 p.m. at the Washburn Rural softball fields. Come cheer on the Lady Blues.

Coach Holaday to speak at clinics

Coach Holaday will be speaking at a coaching clinic in Salina on Wednesday, February 15. This clinic is for all softball coaches and is hosted by K-State at Salina. She will speak about Sustaining a Winning Program.  Additional speakers at the clinic include: Kristi Bredbenner and Megan Sheeley, Wichita State; Megan Smith, University of Kansas; Matt Windle, Baker University; Janice Esses, Bethany College.

Coach Holaday will also speak at the Kansas Coaches Association's Coach School in August.
