Rural girls rout West, 65-27

 

Topeka West’s girls held out four regular starters and fell behind 18-0 at the start of their matchup with Washburn Rural, eventually falling 65-27 at Rural on Tuesday night.

As a disciplinary measure, West coach Jason Wilson kept four of his starters on the bench for a good portion of the game.

Senior Ashley Grant, held out for the first several minutes of the contest, finally opened the scoring for West with 1:50 left in the first quarter. Her nine first half points weren’t enough to keep the game close, however. Rural led 38-16 at the half.

RURAL GIRLS 32, SHAWNEE HEIGHTS 31

One free throw was the difference as the Washburn Rural girls avoided Shawnee Heights' upset bid.

Both teams made 11 field goals, with three 3-pointers each, but the Blues were 7 of 12 at the free throw line and the T-Birds were 6 of 13. Heights' Danielle Poblarp made the first of a two-shot foul with 8.8 seconds left in the game but missed her second attempt, and Rural ran out the final seconds.

Rural boys win, girls fall

OLATHE NORTHWEST GIRLS 58, WASHBURN RURAL 41

Olathe Northwest, ranked No. 2 in Class 6A, scored 14 straight points at the end of the third quarter and start of the fourth to put No. 4-ranked Washburn Rural away in Friday’s non-league contest.

Lady Blues vs. Topeka High

 

WASHBURN RURAL GIRLS 56, TOPEKA HIGH 51

Rural and High were neck and neck for three and a half quarters until Rural used a late 8-0 run to pull away.

The score was tied at 45 with 4:34 left, but the Junior Blues hit six of eight free throws over the next two minutes and got a clutch lay-up from freshman Paige Cunningham to take a 53-45 lead with 2:24 left. High never got within four points the rest of the way.

Junior Blues roll past KC-Wyandotte

RURAL GIRLS 82, WYANDOTTE 14

All 11 players that saw action scored as Washburn Rural opened with a dominating performance.

Junior standout Erika Lane paced the Junior Blues with a game-high 19 points while junior Charly Michaelis added 11 points and sophomore Courtney Winkley and freshman Paige Cunningham had 10 apiece. Rural shot 57.9 percent from the field and forced 41 Wyandotte turnovers.

Rural girls enter with same goals

Washburn Rural's girls suffered significant graduation losses, including two of their top three scorers, off last year's team, which was fourth in Class 6A.

But the Junior Blues enter the 2011-2012 season with the same expectations they always have, to be a contender in the Centennial League and 6A.
