Belly Up by Stuart Gibbs

A zoo-themed adventure park sounded like a great idea. But when FunJungle's mascot, a grumpy hippo named Henry, goes belly up, no one at the park seems bothered by the mysterious events surrounding his death.  No one, that is, except 12-year-old Teddy Fitzroy, who does just enough digging into the events surrounding Henry's death to uncover exactly what he expected - a dirty conspiracy.  This book is funny and a very quick read.  I loved it!

Holes by Louis Sachaar
Stanley Yelnats is at Camp Greenwood digging holes because of a curse brought on his family generations earlier by his no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealling-great-great-grandfather. But is it possible that Stanley might have a bigger purpose at Camp Greenwood? This is a great book--if you like stories about friendship and treasure-seeking, you'll enjoy every word of this book.

Who Put that Hair in my Toothbrush? by Jerry Spinelli
Siblings Megin and Greg hate each other's guts. Seriously. Megin once tried to lock Greg in a closet and suck the air out with a straw, and Greg once pulled the hair out of the shower drain and weaved it into the bristles of Megin's toothbrush. See why they hate each other? If you've ever had a conflict with a brother or sibling, this hilarious book about a prank-pulling brother/sister pair is for you!

Flipped by Wendelin Van Draanen
Juliana has loved Bryce since he moved in across the street in second grade. Bryce has hated Juliana since he moved in across the street in second grade. But as the years go by, they each learn that the other is not exactly as they seem, and soon they find they've flipped! This was my favorite book of last summer! I highly recommend it to everyone!

There's a Girl in my Hammerlock by Jerry Spinelli
Maisie is young, athletic, and very gutsy. She works hard, loves her family, and cares about her teammates. However, when she goes out for the boys-only wrestling team, people are more than a little bothered. In the face of adversity, she keeps going because she believes in what she is doing. If this sounds like you or someone you know, I think you will enjoy this book!

That's how Eric, V, Lily, and Parker feel in this story about a blended family. Will they ever learn to live with each other? Will they ever learn to love each other? Find out with this fantastic, quick read!

The View from Saturday by E.L. Konnigsburg
This book follows four unlikely friends and a slightly unordinary teacher on their incredible journey to the state Academic bowl tournament. It is entertaining, funny, and will leave you wishing Ethan, Nadia, Julian, and Noah attended WRMS!

The Yellow Star by Jennifer Roy
A true story, this short book follows a young Jewish girl at the height of Hitler's reign in Europe. With her home gone and her family forced to live in the Polish ghetto, her death at the hands of the Nazi's seems certain. Told in free verse poetry, this story will be one you won't soon forget! It was also a William Allen White Nominee in 2009.

Someone Named Eva by Joan M. Wolf
Also set during the reign of Nazi Germany, this book follows a young girl who fits Hitler's Aryan profile, with blonde hair, blue eyes, and the perfect nose. She is ripped from her family and forced to turn her back on the life she once knew. But will she be able to remember it, or will it simply become a part of the past? I read this book and loved it so much I wanted to write the author and thank her for this fabulous book!

The Boy in the Striped Pajamas by John Boyne
Bruno, a nine-year-old German boy, does not understand when his father, an important officer in the Nazi army, moves their family to a strange home in the country called Out-With. Why is there a strange fence in the backyard, with people dressed in striped pajamas behind it? Why do these people never take showers, and seem to be hungry all the time? And why does the boy Bruno has befriended, seem so terrified of the German guard? A touching story of friendship and the horrors of the Hollocaust (and also a 2009 film), this book was a popular favorite among Voyagers in 2008-2009.

Black Horses for the King by Anne McCaffrey
The old England setting of this book combined with the legend of King Arthur gives this book a bit of a fantasy feel. It follows the story of Galwyn, a young horseman charged with keeping the horses of the man who is to become the legendary King Arthur. It has some challenging vocabulary but is a very good read.
The Magician's Nephew by C.S. Lewis
If you like fantasy, mystery, animals, and magic, you will love this book. It is original, unique, and very entertaining. It is one of my favorite books of all time-I read it every year! I hope you will give this book a try. (Also try the other six books in The Chronicles of Narnia. They are wonderful as well!)

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
When Katniss discovers she has been chosen to be sent to the Hunger Games, she realizes she will have to fight to the death. What she doesn't bank on is the emotional toll the fight will take both on her, and on those she loves. I read this book in 2 days. It was my favorite book of the 08-09 school year!

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone by J.K. Rowling
The first and the shortest of the Harry Potter Series, this book is great for those looking for mystery, magic, and suspense. If you liked the movie, read this book, as it will explain many things in more detail.

(Also try the other six books in the Harry Potter series. My personal favorite is Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.)

Eragon by Christopher Paolini I've talked to very few students who did not like this book. I enjoyed parts of it, but it was not my favorite. However, if you like fire, dragons, and battles, this may be the book for you. (Eragon is book one in the Inheritance Trilogy. Books two and three are also available.)

The Lightening Thief by Rick Riordan
When Percy Jackson finds out he's the son of an Olympian god (and not ADHD, as his teachers have always told him), he discovers a whole new world of mythical creatures, strange places, and an abnormal, dysfunctional family. This book is the first in the Olympian series and was perhaps the most popular series among Voyager students in the 2008-2009 school year. And, the film version comes out in February of 2010!
