Shared Reading:

I teach all of the shared reading for 5th grade. We will be learning reading strategies for comprehension, such as plot, drawing conclusions, making inferences, summarizing, and much, much more. The best thing to do to support your student is to follow his/her agenda and set a reading time every night.

Grading:

I take grades for these four categories: AR, Vocabulary,

Comprehension, and Projects and Tests. Grades at 70% or below are

required to be corrected and turned back in for an average grade.

I will take other corrections as well, which is up to your child to

make sure it gets completed in a timely manner.

Accelerated Reading Program:

AR is a part of your child's reading grade and is the independent reading part of our district's Balanced Literacy program. I encourage students to choose "good fit" books that are fun to read. This is meant for your child to develop a love of reading and a voracious reading "appetite." If your child chooses a book that is not "AR," I have a list of other choices to do instead of taking a test he/she may use for AR points.

Tracking AR progress:

Many parents are asking how to track their child's AR progress. You can do this following these steps:

  1. Go to the Farley Website.
  2. Go to Student's Corner and click on Renaissance Place, it's #8 on the list.
  3. Log-in using your child's AR password. They know it even if they say they don't. It's the student ID # and birthdate.
  4. This will show your student's history for the past 3 years and current progress towards their goal.
  5. On the top menu, you may choose e-mail setup. This will allow you to receive an e-mail each time your child takes an AR test.
