T-Shirts for sale! The 5th and 6th grades will once again sport t-shirts to be worn at our concerts. The cost is a low, low $5.50. Mrs. Robinson and Mrs. Good would like to have all t-shirts purchased by the end of September!

Welcome to Jay Shideler! You will have music 20 minutes each school day and will learn about beat, rhythm, and pitch through singing, activities, and games. You'll also learn to play classroom rhythm instruments. Our Kindergarten Recognition Program is May 11 at 2:30 p.m. in the Jay Shideler Gym.

First Grade is so much fun and we have lots of fun in the music room too! Music class meets every day for 20 minutes and during that time you will learn about beat, rhythm, pitch and music notation through singing, activities, and games. You'll also learn about the classroom instruments and get to play them. Our 1st Grade Music Program is March 1st at 7:00 p.m. in the Jay Shideler Gym.

Second Grade music meets every-other day for 40 minutes. On the days you don't have music, you have PE - we alternate on Fridays. In 2nd grade music we continue our study of beat, rhythm, pitch and instruments. We will play games, learn to write music, play instruments and of course, sing! We will have our music program on December 15 at 7:00 p.m. in the Jay Shideler Gym. We share our music program with the 3rd grade.

Third Grade music meets every-other day for 40 minutes. On the days you don't have music, you have PE - we alternate on Fridays. In 3rd grade music we continue our study of beat, rhythm, pitch and instruments. We will play games, write music, play instruments and of course, sing! We will have our music program on December 15 at 7:00 p.m. in the Jay Shideler Gym. We share our music program with the 2nd grade.

Fourth Grade music meets every-other day for 40 minutes. On the days you don't have music, you have PE - we alternate on Fridays. Fourth Grade is a very exciting year in the music room. We get to learn to play recorders, so the start of the year will focus on learning to read music. Our BIG event is the 4th Grade Musical which will be April 5 at 2:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. The entire school gets to come to the 2:00 performance! The last part of the school year will be spent learning about band and orchestral instruments to help you make decisions for 5th grade music. A special night to try out band and orchestra instruments will be April 12, 6:00 p.m at Farley Elementary. This is an all-district event.

5th Grade

Fifth Grade music is divided into three groups: band, chorus, and orchestra. Band and Orchestra meet on Mondays and Wednesdays and alternating Fridays. Chorus meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays and alternating Fridays.

Band - In band you will learn how to put together your instrument, how to produce a good tone, and how to read notes and rhythms so we can play together to create music. Believe it or not, by our concert in December, we will sound like a real band!

Chorus - In Chorus you will learn to read rhythm and pitches. You will also learn about the way music is put together which is known as "form". Of course, you will also get to sing a lot as we will have two concerts during the year. At our first concert, we will sing with the 6th grade chorus, but for the concert in April, we will sing just as a 5th Grade Chorus!

Orchestra - Orchestra is taught by Mrs. Cheri Robinson. In orchestra you will learn to play either the violin, viola, cello, or bass. You get to have two concerts, one in December, and one in April.

6th Grade

Sixth Grade music is divided into three groups: band, chorus, and orchestra. Band and Orchestra meet on Mondays and Wednesdays and alternating Fridays. Chorus meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays and alternating

Fridays.

Band - In band you will continue the study of the instrument you started in 5th grade. Some students will change instruments, such as a switch from trumpet to French Horn, but most will keep the same instrument as

the year before. We will work as a band to improve knowledge of rhythms and pitches, improve tone quality, and improve maturity of sound. We will have a concert in December, and another big one at the high school in April.

Chorus - In chorus you will continue the study of rhythm, and we will also be learning to read pitches. Throughout the year we will also learn about dynamics, tempo, and study the lives and music of famous musicians such as Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, and Haydn. We will do a lot of singing as well and will have two concerts: one in December and a big all-district concert at the middle school in February.

Orchestra - Orchestra is taught by Mrs. Cheri Robinson. In orchestra you will continue to learn to play your instrument as well as become a more mature musician. Orchestra has two concerts: one in December, and one in April.

Shideler Singers is open to any 5th or 6th grader who would like to participate. We meet Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:00-8:35 a.m. The first practice will be Tuesday, August 30th. Shideler Singers performs for area nursing homes as well as events such as "Festival of Trees". We have also performed at West Ridge Mall, Kansas Rehabilitation Hospital and Barnes & Noble. These performances are in December and April. Except for the Barnes & Noble performance which is on a Saturday, Shideler Singers gets to MISS a whole day of school (once in December, and once in May) AND we get to eat at the mall and even do a little shopping! So --- if you LOVE to sing, join Shideler Singers!
