1. Students who read or listen to two books and then turn in two book reports are eligible to vote for their favorite (and help determine the award winner!) the first week of April.

2. We will be taking a field trip in October to the William Allen White Award Ceremony in Emporia. Students will become eligible to go on the 2012 field trip if :

  • Third graders read, test, and pass (80%) five books.
  • Fourth graders read, test, and pass (80%) eight books.
  • Fifth graders read, test, and pass (80%) twelve books
  • Sixth graders (that want to attend from Middle School) read, test, and pass (80%) fifteen books.

3. Students are allowed to make posters and campaign for their favorite book before the voting in April.

4.  Our 5th and 6th graders are having a Battle of the Books competition over the William Allen White nominees.  The winning team will be included on the Emporia Field Trip next year and will win Barnes and Noble gift certificates.

5.  Finally, all our 6th grade students read a William Allen White nominee at the beginning of the year and then we videotape them presenting a book talk on their books and show it to our 3rd through 5th grade students to help them determine which books to vote for.

Here, Mr. Estrada's class votes for their favorite William Allen White book. Everyone that qualified to vote by turning in two book reports received  a chocolate treat, a biz card, and an "I Voted" sticker, as well as the privilege of choosing the next winner!

The student posters are made the week before to promote their favorite book.
